Recently, I found fisherman using stingrays as "bait" to catch sharks. However, what many people don't know is that many different species of stingrays are either endangered or vulnerable to being endangered. Also, like many organisms, stingrays are extremely important for the ecosystem! Stingrays are one of the top predators of the ecosystem, aside from the occasional shark or large fish. However, this does not make their population stay constant, stingrays are slow to mature which makes them vulnerable to pollution, fishing, and also habitat degadation. Not only do rays keep the population of fish, mollucs, and other small marine animals down, but they also displace sand and other bottom feeders for other marine life to find prey. I would like to have fishers have a special liscense or a law against killing rays for bait! People need to become educated about the importance of these organisms!
