| 256 | Reginald Hodges | It hurts me to see new YMCAs being built in prospering communities while YMCAs in communities that need YMCAs close.
A "Y' is more than a gym. In Lakewood, it is the heart of the community. It's where people come to learn, to plan, to organize, to socialize, to strengthen bonds, to combat crime, to nurture kids, to mentor youth, to...............
All YMCAs are good. However, the Lakewood community needs the Lakewood YMCA more than downtown Durham needs the downtown YMCA or the ATC needs a small YMCA. Lakewood is a dynamic growing community with diverse (Black, White and Hispanic) hardworking residents. These residents care about their community.
Durham will either pay now or later to provide services to Lakewood residents. I hope Durham will choose empowerment over incarceration. For one, it costs less.
I think the Lakewood YMCA should be purchased/leased by the city and offered to the Durham Literacy Center, EDGE and other non-profits that work to empower Durham citizens.

| 258 | Jeffrey Hester | Please do not close this location. It is very inconvenient for me and my family to go to the downtown locations. |
| 259 | Bill Parker | Durham needs a YMCA in this area. It seems somewhat questionable to open up a big new facility only a few blocks away from an existing one, and then to try to close the one on the "other side" of town. |
| 260 | Angel Redoble | in our rush to move on to bigger things, we tend to forget that a lot of small things are set to the wayside. the y has served the area for years and should be able to stay open, years from now when the young generation of today becomes adults and have families that rely on the y for the mission that it ascribes to. the y plays a vital role in our community. i do not need to point that out.
thank you. |
| 261 | Eleanor Cox | My husband and I have both been members off and on and live 1/2 mile away, so it is very convenient. Has anyone explored the possibility of donating the building and land to the city and letting the Parks and Recreation Department convert it to a community center? We need well-run facilities with indoor pools. Perhaps the city could also acquire the old YMCA on Trinity Avenue now that Duke is moving their Diet and Fitness Center. |

| 265 | ruth shaffer | As a Y Member for many years, I cannot imagine not having it available for families...there must be a way to keep it open... |

| 273 | Jay L Peters | This is a valuable resource to our community. The closing of this facility would be a great loss to Durham and the surrounding community near the YMCA. |

| 279 | Reddy Parvata | This should be one of the projects that the city should consider as the most important for the citizens. |
| 280 | Sven Rinke | The Lakewood Y is an essential part of the neighborhood and as such is definitely worth saving. Upgrading facilities would help in making it more attractive. |
