Jessica BarbThe Lakewood YMCA is a vital part of this neighborhood. It would be a shame to lose it.

Mary Wible-BrennanMy family has lived here for 11 years and consider the Lakewood YMCA an asset and a stabilizing force in our neighborhood. We have been members off and on over the years. I encourage the leadership of the YMCA to look at its mission statement especially the part that says "to build strong communities" and weigh what the closure of the Lakewood Y would do.

Sandy DemereeI use this YMCA location and would like to see it stay open, mostly because of the great number of local children who use it and would not be able to get downtown to swim!!

William TriplettI believe that any decision concerning this facility should be delayed until discussion concerning its future role as a community center can be conducted. I am a member of the downtown YMCA and fully support the Y and its programs.

Alice HallPlease keep the Lake YMCA open for community use, where many can continue to come and share in a wide range of activities with others of diverse backgrounds which are the essentials of healthy community.

AnonymousThe YMCA is and should be a community resource, not just another commercial health club. Why try to compete with commercial health clubs when your mission is more noble and valuable? The Lakewood YMCA is an example of where you succeed in supporting a community - please work toward making this sustainable before chasing new customers and a new mission in the suburbs.
Denny HoodThe YMCA is an asset to the neighborhood. Please keep it there.
Cesanne BerryI no longer belong to the Y but when we were raising our two girls, we were active members. Since they attended a private school with less diversity, we purposely supported the Y because we wanted that important diversity in their lives. Our experiences with soccer, swim lessons, gymnastics were great! I really hope there is a way to keep this facility open. I am sure the private gyms, dance studios, gymnastics studios, organized soccer have impacted the Y adversely. I wonder if a marketing effort would help to bring some of these folks to the Y.

Susan HertzThe Lakewood Y serves the community in a way that no other Y does or will ever do. It is not cost effective now because of decisions made by the Y over many years. I hope the Y will do the right thing and make decisions now to correct this. Thank you, Susan
Christian FerneyEven with the potential for expansion in other areas of the city and the condition of the building, a decision to close the Lakewood YMCA would be premature. The surrounding neighborhoods are committed to helping the Lakewood YMCA remain a vibrant and viable part of the community for the forseeable future.
Joyce YoungThe Y is an essential part of our community. Please keep it open.

Richard ZiglarI thought when the Durham Ys went over to management by the Triangle Y folks that they would respect and preserve what is necessary for Durham. A so called Christian organization should be serving where the need is greatest... in some of our poorer neighborhoods.
Kay WebbIt is important to the community to have this building occupied.
Shawn SendlingerThe Lakewood Y is a crucial resource to the surrounding community, including many at-risk youth.

Kenny DalsheimerDear YMCA Board and Management: I wanted to add how important the Lakewood Y has been to our family over the past 18 years and especially during the early years of childrearing. Each of my children participated in Y sports activities and teams and I coached for many years on the soccer and basketball fields. The community came together for practices and games and I met many long time friends through the Y. Finally, I feel that Durham needs more not less healthy places to play/work/socialize and closing this facility would be a real loss for families in the neighbhorhoods surrounding this location. Thanks for your consideration. Kenny Dalsheimer
AnonymousClosing the Lakewood Y would be a detriment to the surrounding community and families who rely on the facility to provide fitness and education opportunities.

Deborah MarionIn addition to serving many low income youth who have no alternative for fellowship and recreation (including swimming instruction-a true safety issue), the Lakewood Y serves as a physical and economic anchor for several lower income neighborhoods in Durham. It is also the only place I have ever known (churches and other Y's included) where people of all colors, and economic and educational backgrounds come together with absolutely no regard for their differences. Finally, Durham has a clear problem with gang membership and elevated school dropout rates; closing the Lakewood Y is a good way to exacerbate those problems.

Robert RobinsonI am energized by the spirit of fitness and fellowship I find at the Lakewood Y. It is one of the rare places where I gather with people of all races and ages in common purpose. Please don't close it down.

Polly MedlicottIt would be so beneficail for the strong, healthy, diverse community movement of Durham to keep Lakewood Y as a community center. Please help make this happen
Kellie MorrisWe need facilities like this to provide a safe place for children in Durham to explore various activities.
George Vaughan
David HarrisI support the community's effort to work out an aggreement with the Triangle YMCA to maintain a present in the Lakewook area.
Sharon BarrellThe Lakewood Y serves so many families. My kids have spent valuable time there engaged in sports activities and camps. It is a central location to many Durham residents. Please don't close it.
