This petition is to serve as a statement that Jamaicans would like our National Emblems, namely the flag to be respected by all as any country would want for their own. A recent coffee shop advertisement by Saturn, a German based company depicts a Jamaican Flag set on fire accidentally, is then taken outside, thrown on the sidewalk and stomped repeatedly in an attempt to put it out. This act caught on CSCs and phone videos sparks worldwide outrage. The ad which obviously had purely good intentions, is playing out in real time, albeit less dramatically but Jamaicans here in Jamaica and the diaspora are upset. WE GOT IT!!! Like anybody else with a brain would, we did, the concept is great! Yes, hats off for paying homage to Jamaica and aspects of our culture....BUT burning the flag has taken away all the honor and pride out of it....It would have been easier to digest if the flag had fallen into a pot of soup or coffee for all intents and purposes. Some say but they raised a bigger one at the end, true, that they did and there was great rejoicing, however, you just DON'T set a country's flag on fire to prove a point, that is very offensive. I think the creators did not think it through carefully because it is illegal in their very own constitution to desecrate, their (Germany) flag. So why would doing same to another county's flag not in reality draw the ire of any country who had that done to their flag? Because it was 'made-up'? Because they were only paying tribute? All we ask is that the company withdraw the advertisement and/or issue an apology to the Jamaican people. We love our country and our culture, it is who we are despite all our flaws. We are a proud and effervescent people who thrive on our inner greatness and revel in our ability to inspire as is evident all around the world. We also LOVE to share this with the world because, while we are out here, a little dot in the Caribbean Sea there are people and places millions and millions of miles and a number of days away from us who KNOW our name, who KNOW who we are, who KNOW what the BLACK, GREEN and GOLD means and who RESPECT us. SHOW YOUR RESPECT FOR YOURSELVES, SIGN THE PETITION! Code for use of the Jamaican Flag -The Jamaican flag should never be allowed to touch the ground or floor. -It should not be flown or used only for decorative purposes on anything that is for temporary use and is likely to be discarded, except on state occasions. -The flag should never be smaller than any other flag flown at the same time. -When the flag becomes worn and must be replaced, it should be burnt PRIVATELY and not used for any other purpose than that, for which it was designated. -Do not place any other flag above or to the right of the Jamaican flag, except at foreign embassies, consulates and missions. (As seen from, say, a building looking outwards, i.e., the left when facing the building.) -Do not raise any foreign flag publicly, unless the Jamaican flag is also flown, except at foreign embassies, consulates and missions. -The flag should not be draped over vehicles, except on military, police and state occasions.
