Dear Colleagues, A couple of weeks ago, a mysterious and unannounced installation of "Frogs" appeared at the Institute Evidently, the staff arrived on a Monday morning to find literally hundreds of frog-like creatures throughout the building. They are made of a vast array of material - colorful, tactile and creative. They were set up like an interactive art project - reading books in the library, signing in to seminars, playing in the kitchen and garden etc. Hearing about it reminded me of the kind of creativity I have seen at various art installation in galleries, where an archetype takes over and the power of the psyche is made visible. Evidently, there have been all kinds of responses to the Frog installation, serving as a fascinating projective object - by clinic patients, staff, interns, analysts and candidates. The mystery of the frogs arrival has stirred a wide range of reactions from joy to tears to confusion to dismay. Unfortunately, the frogs were removed after a few days and few of us got to actually see them. This is why I am writing to you. Several candidates and interns who got to see the display put together a letter to submit to the Aesthetics Committee asking that the frogs be reinstated as an art installation with the approval of the Institute so that more of us can experience them. So far, it has been signed by candidates, interns, staff and some analysts You are invited to sign on, if it interests you. I have attached a few photos that were taken so that you can get a sense of what this is. The first was a scene of two frogs - evidently an analyst and a patient - with a dream or story written on a spiral of paper, while snails and mushrooms witness the exchange. The other photos speak for themselves. The whole thing sounds whimsical and provocative, having the effect of a living archetype. If you would like your name added, please sign this virtual petition and your name will be added to the list. Playfully yours, Susan Williams
