For over 30 years the students of Belmont High School's Performing Arts Company have participated in a beloved tradition- the Boxer Run. After every main stage production, those who have worked on the show so hard for the past three to four months, take a victorious lap around the school in only boxer shorts. It is the ultimate community event, with people of all ages and backgrounds cheer on the gleeful runners, and all those who choose to run, (it is made clearly optional, a speech is always given beforhand to make sure everyone is comfortable), are in the most supportive environment possible. Everyone is cheered for no matter what're and everyone leaves happy and satisfied that they had fully completed a project involving countless hours of rehearsal. Recently, administrators without warning stopped this tradition without clear reason, simply citing "unprofessionalism." It was Made clear no debate was to be had, turning away from all of the many reasons this silly yet harmless tradition should in fact continue. It is devastating to the students to which this has been the moment of satisfaction, what they had been looking forward to the entire process. We simply want to reinstate this tradition. However absurd, it is something enjoyed by a large group of students, parents, relatives, belmont citizens, (even school committee members!), and should without a doubt be reinstated. Please add your name to this position to show support of bringing back this community tradition, and to let administrators know it was handled, ironically, extremely unprofessionally.
