Success for Campaign to save a direct commuter train service from Flint to Manchester
Many thanks for signing my petition to save the popular 7.21 commuter service from Flint to Manchester which Arriva Trains Wales had proposed to cut when they were consulting on a new timetable which is due to start this month.
As a result of the fantastic response to the petition we have been successful in getting Arriva Trains Wales to accept that a direct train service from Flint to Manchester for morning commuters is vital.
In response a new service will now leave Flint station at 06.45 and arrive at Manchester Piccadilly at 08.18, which some people have already told me is a better time since it means they have plenty of time to get to their offices by 9am.
I did argue that an earlier start would not be convenient for some commuters but we have established the principle that there should be direct trains to Manchester. I hope that in future we can persuade Arriva Trains Wales or the new train operating company taking over in 2018 to run a second later train direct to Manchester without the inconvenience of having to change platforms at Chester.
For those who have previously used the 7:21 service to connect with a London train at Chester to take advantage of off-peak saver tickets, a new service leaving Flint at 7:35 will now operate. This will allow passenger to join the same London service from Chester and so still arrive in London at 10:06.
I have been disappointed to learn that the Welsh Government Transport Minister’s support for the axing of the Flint-Manchester service was on the recommendation ofRail Future Cymru. This is not an organisation I have heard of before and have subsequently discovered that it does not have a viable branch in North Wales. I will be suggesting to the Transport Minister that in future she consults with organisations that are genuinely representative of train travellers in North Wales.
