Please help us save the My New Home scheme. This scheme helps people enter the housing market in the NT by providing finance with little or no deposits, reducing stamp duty and waiving mortgage insurance. It is not a sub-prime risk, as lending criteria is very strict and only funds those who can pay the money back. To buy a house in Darwin you need around $100,000 deposit. It is difficult to save that kind of money while paying high rent, and by the time you have saved it the prices will have gone up again! This scheme will also support the building industry in the NT and encourage competition. This scheme was planned to run for 2 years. We need to ask Terry Mills and his new Government to let the scheme run, and look at other measures for sustainable housing in the NT in the meantime. This is our better future in the balance!
