The American Medical Association has changed coding for Mental Health Services effective January 1, 2013. Due to the new coding, insurance companies are experiencing a log jam of claims that have gone unpaid. This seriously affects all Mental Health caregivers who are not being paid, as well as MILLIONS of patients whose treatment will be cut off because of the new coding (some of which cuts down therapy time to 45 minutes from the previous 50 minutes allowable). Is our current society only paying lip service to the importance of Mental Health care? Quality mental health services should be covered more, not less under these coding changes. Are we going to experience more chaos from leaving the seriously mentally ill hanging? After Aurora and Newtown incidents we see the danger to the general public of leaving patients undertreated/untreated. AMA, reinstate last years codes until we have a strong consensus as to how to move forward with Mental Health care in the United States of America.
