Name: Anthony Ridgway on May 4, 2012Comments: As former head coach of Goldrush, and long-serving cheerleader I'm so saddened to hear this and urge the AU to find a compromise here. Over the years Loughborough University cheerleaders have developed a great reputation behind that name, that reputation and the strength of the name is something I take great pride in having helped create. I was there when the name was chosen and always loved how distinctive it was. Team nicknames/mascots are a tradition in American sports such as Cheerleading and American Football, and I feel the AU needs to appreciate that. I'm sure compromise can be reached. Lastly, it was Cassie Hibbert, former coach of the team who chose the name. Cassie tragically died several years ago. The team was her pride in life and the name was a legacy she left. It would be very sad for me and those who knew her to see that gone.Flag

Loughbrough Goldrush Cheerleaders are known around the UK for being amazing athletes, so taking away their identity of being a Goldrush cheerleader is not wise. Most team names have something about them, eg- Dorset Dragons, not Dorset County Cheerleaders, and are remembered for that name. Keep Goldrush.Flag
