Name: L N on Sep 15, 2002State:Country: UKComments: ITV1 is out of touch with the opinion of its viewers. That's why the viewing figures and programme quality are so low - ITV should stop listening to its acolytes and start listening to the publicFlag

Name: Andy Kinnear on Sep 15, 2002State:Country: UKComments: I feel this rebranding of ITV is a mistake. The use of local announcers is a subtle reminder that ITV has a base in each of its reigonal areas. Even the BBC - a national institution - recognises the vital need for local announcers and touch to its identity. To make such a drastic change is a mistake - as is removing the existing ident animations. - The new ITV branding sounds like a disaster. ITV should be better than the BBC or 5. - At the rate things are going, it is becoming the worst errestrial channel in British televisions history.Flag

Name: David Vaughan on Sep 15, 2002State:Country: UKComments: I feel that taking away the regional identity of the ITV stations is a big mistake for the network. Since 1955 viewers have identified with there local ITV station. Also when people go on holiday or move to a new area they know state away, which is there local station and where to look in newspaper for the listing for that regoinFlag

Name: ROB LUBBOCK on Sep 15, 2002State:Country: UKComments: If they go ahead with this dreadful format. They are simply killing local ITV coverage. It's bad enough even our Local ITV area is now called "CARLTON CENTRAL" where it should be CENTRAL.The way ITV is going they soon won't have many viewers, why can't ITV be left alone and let in continue with local Idents and format instead of making such radical changes. ITV now is certainly not the same ITV we all grew up with especially in my period late 70's and 80's. If the IBA was still in control today they would have allowed all this nonsense!Flag

Name: Dominic Jackson on Sep 16, 2002State:Country: UKComments: Not only save the announcers but bring back proper regionalism - individual idents at the start of each programme and character for each station. ITV could truly win by being the only mainstream "local" channel - instead of another faceless national network.Flag

Name: Mark Allinson on Sep 17, 2002State:Country: UKComments: What is most astonishing is the lack of commercial acumen in this decision. What is ITV's unique selling point in relation to other commercial channels Its regionalism. In a schedule dominated by samey entertainment, soap and dramas (however expensive) the regional identity might yet save ITV's bacon in the long term. It is absurd to believe the consultants who say that there is consumer confusion between the ITV national brand and the local brand for a particular contractor. This dualism has existed for nearly 50 years and has never confused. We all always understood that we were watching ITV even though the branding was 'Southern' etc. In the multichannel era, ITV must do all it can to stand out from the crowd, and this decision makes no commercial logic.Flag

Name: Barry Freeman on Sep 19, 2002State:Country: NLComments: I fully agree with you that continuity announcers should be kept local. Living in the Netherlands, I receive BBC1 and BBC 2 but not ITV, which I can receive in my house in Spain. When I was there last month, I was horrified to see that even Meridian is now a Granada company. ITV 1 has, therefore, become an oligopoly with Carlton and Granada having the mammoth share of the system. This is not the ITV I grew up with to love and adore. Yes there were anomalies at the beginning such as ATV broadcasting to the Midlands from Monday to Friday and London and the SE at the weekends. In addition, before YTV came along, there was Granada broadcasting to the NW and Yorkshire from Monday to Friday with ABC broadcasting at weekends from Didsbury and Teddington. Such anomalies were disposed of after 1968 which is the era I believe everyone who has followed ITV, holds dear to their heart. It was local and more streamlined; let's return to those days and for once forget about the shareholders of Granada and Carlton. Heaven knows what may happen if non-British-owned companies are allowed to bid for the franchises! Wait a minute though; it might be a good thing and teach Granada and Carlton a lesson. One must never forget that there is one ITV region that will always remain local and that is Channel TV. The laws of the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey ensure this happens. Perhaps STV and Grampian should follow suit by lobbying the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh; UTV lobbying Stormont and the Welsh ITV companies lobbying the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. This would help retain an element of local identity. The same could then apply to the new English regional councils.Flag

Name: Cllr Ian Sherwood on Sep 22, 2002State:Country: UKComments: I would like to resgister my protest at the gradual erosion of the Local ITV service as we have known it for so many years. The plan to cut regional continuity is part of a slippery slope I believe to abandoning all that we have come to know and love about our local ITV companies over the years. Please do not do it. Please retain regional ITV as it was meant to be. Yours sinerely Cllr Ian SherwoodFlag

Name: Joseph Gallant on Sep 22, 2002State: MACountry: USComments: British TV, both the BBC and ITV networks, have the kind of live on-screen continuity announcers we never really have had in America. I hope that both ITV and the BBC will continue to use on-screen continuity announcers. To save money, it may be possible to pre-record some local continuity announcements, but such on-screen announcements should remain, and live if possible. I also hope that the ITV system will still use regional identities. If ITV wants to use it's name in regional promotions, what's so bad about using "ITV/Carlton London" as an example That way, you have both the network name AND the local broadcaster's name identifying the local ITV service. Here in thre United States, local stations affiliated with a network don't just call themselves "NBC", "Fox" or "CBS". They often use the channel number with the network name, so the stations are known to their viewers as "7/NBC", "Fox 25" and "CBS 4". These stations are thus able to "brand" BOTH their network AND their local channel number (or in some cases, their call letters).Flag

Name: Steven Wood on Sep 28, 2002State:Country: AUComments: When I was in Britain a few years ago I was very impressed at how homely many ITV stations and on-air personalities were, and the way in which the names of most companies reflected the sense of each station's identity with the community it serves. Meridian is such a very lovely name and it even reflects a very important feature of the south of England in that the Greenwich Meridian Line passes through much of the south-east, and the name Anglia is one that has stood the test of time as one of the English eastcountry's most precious pieces of heritage for over 40 years. It is disgraceful that the ITV Association want to replace all this and more with their own preferred national ITV1 service from London. We all need to put pressure on the ITC to act before the Granada/Carlton-dominated ITV Association board have their senseless way.Flag

Name: Mark Savage on Oct 30, 2002State:Country: UKComments: Though the new on screen branding is now a fait accompli, it is dreadful. Bland, boring, pointless and cheap-like so many of ITV's programmes these days. The regional identity of ITV is something of which to be proud. Excuses about the multi-channel environment take no account of its very uniqueness as a regional service and I will particularly miss the distinctives of LWT and Carlton in London. You achieve nothing but disgusted rebuke from me for this move.Flag
