The diggers have officially left the site and our woodland is safe. I am completely overwhelmed by what you have achieved here because this outcome belongs entirely to your persistence. Please keep an eye on the trees in the coming weeks while everything settles back to normal.

To Alex Attwood, Minister for the Environment, Northern Ireland.

Prehen Woods is an ancient 400 year old woodland, protected under a full Tree Preservation Order and is a designated Area of Nature Conservation. It provides habitat for the endangered red squirrel and is a hive of bio-diversity. However this week diggers began destruction at the ancient woodland in order to begin a luxury housing development. The Planning Service who granted planning permission, appear to have ignored their own criteria and guidelines as well as the Derry Area Plan. Please help Save this Ancient Prehen Woodland by overturning the Planning Service decision. We are also calling for an independent inquiry into the procedures, processes and decisions made by the Planners with regard to Prehen Woods.

I honestly never imagined that a hundred people would care about this little patch of woods as much as I do. This is entirely because of you and your willingness to speak up for the trees.

COMMENTS 4 houses...you must be out of your planning minds. These woods are important. ..cutting down trees is a crime. The whole affair smells!

I am deeply saddened by this shallow activity and would like to ask the environment minister to consider future generations who would prefer to see rich, green forests, to ugly brick buildings.

Disgraceful. My kids play here all the time and now they want to ruin it for houses nobody needs. Stop this now.

Total madness. Once its gone its gone forever. Should be protecting our wildlife not building luxury flats on top of it.

Cant believe this is actually happening. Those trees have been there longer than any of us. Leave them alone.
