Comments: Preserve NYC which under Mike Bloomberg, Christine Quinn a real estate sell-out and Amanda the People’s Burden now resembles a bad xerox of Dubai including the Bowery. Bloomberg and gang want the Bowery to resemble Wall St. with a few token historic buildings maybe if we are lucky. Shameful.Flag -

Name: David Mulkins on Aug 15, 2011Comments: This charming early 1800s Federal-style building is among our city's oldest buildings. Located across the street from the iconic Stanford White designed Bowery Savings Bank (1895), it is located in the most well-preserved stretch of the historic Bowery, the city's oldest thoroughfare. Tap dance, minstrelsy, Yiddish theater, streetcars, vaudeville, Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, Abstract Expressionism, Beat literature, and punk rock all have a seminal connection to this street. With tourism in the area on the upswing, it is thus in the city's economic best interest to preserve and protect the Bowery's historic sense of place. Save 135 Bowery!Flag

Name: Michele Campo on Aug 16, 2011Comments: As a longtime Bowery resident I care very deeply about the indispensable and unique history of this legendary street. The community of the Bowery is grateful to you, Councilmember Chin, for seeing that our city's history is preserved in the face of uncontrolled development. Adding 135 to many other Bowery landmarks build a historic district that will make this distinctive route a social, cultural, and economic destination. We need to protect the Bowery's historical architecture. This will ensure a positive development plan which will benefit not only the low-rise neighborhood, but also its cultural significance, and continue such diversity as the immigrant community now threatened by encroaching gentrification. The recent destruction of 35 Cooper Sq., that lovely, irreplaceable Federal style house is still mourned by many influential preservation groups and individuals. With 135 Bowery we have a building which has already passed the incredibly stringent process of the LPC. So it is up to you, Councilmember Chin, to ensure its survival. We look forward eagerly to your vote in support of its landmark designation. Let support of The Historic Bowery be part of your future legacy! ----------mFlag

We respect future generations of Bowery residents and visitors by allowing them to experience at least a visual taste of what this unique thoroughfare and neighborhood has meant to our American culture. Thanks for you're consideration, Douglas Davis 8 Spring St.Flag
