This petition is to voice our collective concerns and demand that the Sarasota Shark Tournament is shut down indefinitely.
Sharks are a crucial part of our eco-system. They keep our oceans in balance and contribute to the air we all share.
Shark fishermen/women will say that killing only a few sharks a year does nothing to our eco-systems but take into consideration the fact that all the sharks caught at the tournament over the weekend of May 15-17, 2009 were no where near sexual maturity. Sharks take 7-8 years before they have a VERY limited number of offspring.
The killing of one shark is one shark too many.
Stand up for the air we all breathe and the kings and queens of the sea. Demand that the killing stops.
Thank you.
I have spent the last few days reading through the stories you all have shared about your experiences with our local waters. It is haunting to realize just how many of these young sharks are being pulled from the ocean before they ever get a chance to grow. I am currently working on a formal letter to the local organizers and I will let you know as soon as I send it off.

Seeing this level of support reminds me that so many others feel the same ache when they see these incredible creatures pulled from our waters. This momentum proves that our community refuses to stay silent while these tournaments continue to threaten our ocean health.
