Name: Gary Kavangh on Jun 16, 2009Comments: Santa Monica, while better than much of LA County, is I think hardly deserving of a Bronze distinction. The bike lanes are all in the door zone, some of the bike route assigned streets are absolutely terrible places to ride. The SMPD is not only lacking of support for cyclists, they seem down right determined to discourage it. Santa Monica should receive an honorable mention at best which I think is stretching it, and LA city should have never received an honorable mention. Awards become meaningless if the bar is set so pathetically low. Gary Kavanagh Resident and Cyclist of Santa Monica garyridesbikes.blogspot.comFlag

Name: Paul Bringetto on Jun 16, 2009Comments: Santa Monica is NOT bicycle friendly at all.. the police are hostile to cyclists and the existing bike lanes are useless for commuting more than a block or two. This award was obviously given by people who have never tried to get anywhere in Santa Monica besides the beach.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jun 16, 2009Comments: Santa Monica has much more work to do towards encouraging biking. The Water Park complex on Colorado prohibits bike parking on the ground level and has NO bicycle friendly parking. Ditto for the Yahoo Center. How sad is that. Even if you live in biking distance you have to drive and congest the streets of Santa Monica.Flag

Name: Emily Lerman on Jun 16, 2009Comments: I am a westside resident and do not think Santa Monica should be awarded as a bike friendly city. The bike path is unsafe and crowded, and there is no useful or safe way to travel from north to south, and vise versa. Just the other night I was trying to ride on Lincoln and was almost hit by a car. There are no bike lanes on the North/South streets. The city seems to spend more money punishing bike riders than figuring out how to get more people safely biking on the streets.Flag

You are hurting cyclists more so than helping and have done all local cycliats a real diservice with this bunk award given to Santa Monica.Flag

Name: Steve Keats on Jun 29, 2009Comments: Having both walked and biked in Santa Monica for more than 20 years I can say unequivically that Santa Monica has become less and less "friendly" to those that choose.....bravely.....to walk or cycle. The city is big on p.r. and self promotion, but performs poorly where the rubber, or the leather meets the pavement. That they should have received this reward is a travesty. I will, however, along with several cyclists I know reward the city with the rust award for their timid, vapid thinking as regards human power for transportation. They seem so afraid of enraging motorists that they do, in essence nothing. A hundred million for parking structures and a single peanut for cyclists and pedestrians. Jeers.........SFlag

Name: Natasha Vokhshoori on Jun 30, 2009Comments: I have biked both frequented bike-friendly cities and Santa Monica on bicycle, and truthfully, there is much improvement that Santa Monica must do in order to receive an award for bicycle friendliness. Please withdraw the award now, or appoint a committee of locals including members of the Bike Writers Collective to reexamine the award in 2010. Thank you, The urban cyclistFlag

While they are better than some parts of Los Angeles when it comes to biking they are very far from being bike friendly. Really the only thing that makes this area nicer to ride in is the fact the streets are well maintained.Flag

Name: Justine Rembac on Jun 30, 2009Comments: The beach bike path does not serve as an effective way for commuter cyclists to travel throughout Santa Monica. It is always covered with sand and filled with pedestrians walking to and from the beach. I am surprised that this recognition was awarded given the fact that bike paths in Santa Monica are in the same space allowed for parked car doors to open into.Flag
