Name: Lindsey Wilder Flatt on Nov 28, 2012Comments: I no longer live in Santa Fe, but spent all of my youth there. I was lucky enough to have W21 growing up, but every time I've come back home after college, I've realized just how barren the cultural scene is for youth in Santa Fe. W21 is an amazing venue, and I was so glad to see it actualized in a new space – but the fact remains: W21 is a youth venue for a specific age demographic. The slightly older crowd – including those in their late teens, but especially those above drinking age – do not want to hang out at a venue with the age demographic that W21 is aimed at. And they shouldn't have to just because there is no other space. Santa Fe loses so many of its finest youth – the next generation of the art and culture that drives our city – because it does not offer them the proper resources. As things stand, Santa Fe is set up for the wealthy, the retired, and those that cannot escape it. This should not be the reputation of the city I love. In the past several years, there have been efforts from a group of people, including those at Meow Wolf, to put Santa Fe back on the map culturally – and when I say culturally, I'm not talking tourist culture, I'm talking about genuine homegrown art and culture. They have done a fine job, but they need help. Santa Fe needs a small, all ages music venue that can host touring bands and serve alcohol. It can be done. I have lived in four cities now: Tacoma/Seattle, Denver, London, and Austin, and every one of them has had venues that served alcohol, and that also offered all ages shows. Every city had some sort of solution to the potential issue of having alcohol served at an all ages show – wristbands, special sections for those under 21, etc., but all of them also realized the necessity of having shows that allowed, and appealed to, both age demographics. Without those under 21 allowed, there would not be enough people at the shows, and without those 21+ allowed, the venues would not make enough money for it to be worth their while to throw a show. I realize that these are bigger cities with more resources … but the solutions their councils have come up with are also incredibly easy. Santa Fe cannot continue to thrive culturally without such a music venue. It is likely that this venue will not thrive immediately. But it is also likely that with one, Santa Fe could begin retaining, and maybe even drawing in, younger generations.Flag

Comments: Can't agree more! Affordable, large space, in general, is hugely lacking in Santa Fe for both public and private events. Astronomical amounts of funding are pumped into spaces that are simply not used to their greatest potential while local promoters are stuck evaluating which tiny, downtown bar they are going to pack like sardines...Flag -

Name: Mike Engeldinger on Nov 30, 2012Comments: Having built and operated a failed quality live music venue here in Santa Fe, I wholeheartedly encourage the development of a quality venue with the help of the city. In my experience the only way to support live local and regional music must involve funding outside the direct revenues associated with the production - there simply is not enough profit built into the built into the model. Being a somewhat tourist driven destination, it seems that Santa Fe has an advantage in supporting its local artists in that the audience base is larger than other cities of similar population. A quality subsidized venue that focuses on showcasing the great local and regional artists would seem to benefit both the artists and the city simultaneously. I appreciate that this petition includes the participation of established music promoters as part of the effort. The local promoters and artists are working together as best as they can to utilize the existing venues, but there is not doubt that having a way to sustain their efforts financially in a quality venue would bring the music scene here in Santa Fe to a new level.Flag

I find it odd that this city , full of talent, is stuck in a limiting Bar climate to perform. Please consider a wider use of city owned buildings, ultimately payed for by its people. Thank you for this consideration.Flag

And shouldn't have to pay to go downtown and park their cars. The buck taxi is a good idea but when you have a monopoly taxi company that only puts 3 cabs out at weekends - it's kinda pointless.Flag

It's pathetic that in one of the world's most artistic towns, there is no proper venue for top-notch live music. Let's get on it and create a more livable, viable city for young people & live music fans of all ages!Flag
