The petition

Whereas the Business Privilege Tax (BPT) of Sanford was poorly thought out and does nothing to improve the business climate in Sanford and;

Whereas the BPT does not treat businesses equitably and discriminates against certain business interests and;

Whereas the BPT adds additional hardship on businesses that are already struggling in a changing economy and;

Whereas the BPT seeks to collect information that should not be within the purview of local government and;

Whereas the BPT allows business competitors access to that privileged information and;

Whereas the BPT has illustrated a fundamental lack of budgetary restraint by city leaders to adopt a fair and well thought out budget and;

Whereas the BPT is a discouragement to entrepreneurs to start new businesses due to additional unnecessary bureaucracy and;

Whereas the BPT generates a fraction of 1% of city revenues and;

Whereas the BPT does NOTHING to promote the well being of citizens, protect them from harm or enhance city services and;

Whereas the BPT was enacted against the will of the Chamber of Commerce, the Sanford Herald, the small businessmen and women of the city and the citizens at-large.

We, the undersigned, using our ability as free citizens, in a free nation, do hereby request for the dissolution of the recently enacted and completely unnecessary Business Privilege Tax within the City of Sanford.
