Comments: The DVD looks great. It's sad that the engine repair scene is missing. Both actors in that scene were nominated for Academy Awards for their performances. This scene is crucial to the devcelopement of their characters. I miss other scenes as well but the engine repair scene most of all. "Hammer, hammer, hammer!" If the film were whole, I would buy at least 7 copies to send to my old gang of friends who held this film and the novel in high esteem.

Comments: The Sand Pebbles was one of the greatest motion pictures that I ever viewed. I was swept away by the story and the characters. This great movie deserves to be carefully restored with all scenes that were edited out included in the movie for a true "director's cut" of the movie. I fervently hope that this great movie is restored to its originally conception and that it is released again on its 50th aniversary.

Comments: A fantastic motion picture! A really superb production the likes of which we will never see again, and was even unique for the times in 1966. If it hadn't been for a director of the caliber of Robert Wise we would not have a picture of this magnitude. I first saw this film when I was 5 years old. Imagine having a five year old seeing a movie like this! Though it's been nearly 40 years I still can't watch the scene of Pohan's death of a thousand cuts. This is truely an "adult" film, not what they consider "adult" today. My father was in the navy during the Korean War and served in the far east, then he read McKenna's Sand Pebbles in the early '60's. He enjoyed the book so much he eagerly anticipated the film for about a year before it came out. The final production was so beautifully wrought it became a favorite for all time. Even though the period of the film was 26 years before my Dad's time in the navy, the writing and acting was so authentic it reminded him vividly of his service and solidified his love and romance of China. As for me it confirmed my interest in Asia and drew me to Hollywood as well. Anyway, a great film and a motion picture not only worthy of restoration -- demanding of it!

Comments: please restore the film. It is an important part of our film history and deserves to be as complete as possible. My grandchildren need to know the truth about war, racism, man's inhumanity to man, and the other issues the film portrays so well. This film will teach them well.

Comments: yes im glad that this petition has bein started up but i would also like if 20th century fox would show some behind the scenes footage of the towering inferno because there is nothing like that on the warner bros. dvd version. it would be great if that was brought to there attention!

Comments: The cinematographer, Joe MacDonald, was an old family friend and I always thought his work on this film was great, as of course is the picture (one of my favorites). Joe was a fine still photographer and also shot a lot of 16mm home movie footage too (it's likely he shot some while on location). I saw the picture while I was in the service and lost touch with the MacDonald family in the years after. It would be a great tribute to Joe to have this film restored, as it would be for all those who were part of making it. But mostly, it would be a grand epic picture for the new audience of today, certainly on par with 20th's "Master & Commander". I hope some progress can be made on this project. Gil Valle

Comments: Some of the most important scenes have been left out. Two specific scenes are the hammer scene, which would have shown Jake's value as an engineer, as well as the scene showing him departing his previous command which was a large warship. The fact that he chose not to be on a large ship is significant to the character.
