San Leandro To Raise The People's Republic Of China Flag in front of City Hall on October 1st
Honorable Mayor Stephen Cassidy:
We were elated when we heard that the majority of the City Council voted, 4 to 3, on September 16, to raise the People’s Republic of China flag on October 1st to recognize the diversity in San Leandro and to show the City’s appreciation for the many contributions made by the Chinese community. The raising of the flag in front of the City Hall to show respect for the Chinese in the community has been a tradition in several Bay Area cities where there is a sizeable Chinese population, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Alameda. It will definitely attract more Chinese businesses come to San Leandro.
However, your unilateral decision to suspend the City Council’s decision to raise the People’s Republic of China flag on October 1st in front of the City Hall today is a great disappointment to the Chinese community. First, you voted NO on this resolution, which tells us that you are not friendly to the Chinese community. Second, when you decided to suspend the City council's decision, did you think about the democratic process that we have worked so hard in preserving? Shouldn't it be majority rule? Your decision was not democratic nor reasonable. As a lawyer and a mayor, you should understand the implication of your decision whichwas unsupported by the Chinese community.
The Chinese community will treat this actas racial discrimination against them. We strongly urge you to honor passing of the resolution by the City Council to proceed with raising the People's Republic of China Flag in front of the City Hall on October 1st.
