Comments: Keeping a small, backyard flock is nothing new or radical. Chickens can be kept humanely & without disturbing the peace of a neighborhood. We need to practice what we are teaching our children: to live sustainably & eco-friendly.

Comments: How far we have come from each family growing their own food as in times past. The recent tomato scare should be a warning to all against keeping individuals from growing and raising their own food.

Comments: i believe you should be able to keep them to a certain number, we pay taxes, and it is not like a chicken is gonna bite your child's arm off like what is permitted.(.i.e. dogs, snakes.lizards) if you can keep a dog that barks then let the chicken cluck

Comments: I keep 23 chickens for eggs at my home. I let them free range through the yard. I have far fewer problems with them than the neighbors free range cats and dogs. I use no pesticides due them eating all of the bugs. If you want to ban something, ban outdoor cats.

Comments: Thank you Carrie for standing up for what is right! Raising chickens allows families to have access to healthier food, less bugs in the yard, and a sense of personal responsibility. We stand beside you. Salem, please consider doing what is right and keep this tradition alive in Salem. My mother-in-law raised her own chickens in Salem when she was a girl, and I want my kids to have that same right.

Comments: I recently moved to the City (of Rke) from Pulaski where I raised goats and chickens. Raising chickens is indeed beneficial for providing good soil and definitely decreases common pests listed in the Petition. With the struggling economy, I fully support any metropolitan area (such as SALEM) to have the choice to own a small flock of hens, providing they are responsible for the upkeep.

Comments: Have you ever seen how chickens in the "regular" food supply are treated It is horrible and disgusting. I would MUCH rather know where my food is coming from. I don't see the harm in having a few chickens in the back yard if they're properly maintained and cared for.

Comments: Until someone does something about the rising cost of EVERYTHING, people better get used to chickens in backyards. People need to be self sufficient. In the Great Depression thats the only way people survived.

Comments: I think having your own chickens in your backyard to lay eggs is a great idea! Chickens should be allowed in Salem City if the flock isn't over 20 or 25 chickens and the grounds are kept clean. People should be allowed to be self-sufficient, especially with prices going up all the time. This also is a great educational opportunity for children.

Comments: Chickens are an incredibly more responsible method of reducing the mosquito population than the alternative chemicals which leach into our groundwater. We are so removed from our food sources in today's world, chickens are a low impact, fun way to get back in harmony with our food on a first hand basis. I would much rather lsiten to a chicken crowing than the 10 dogs that live around me and bark at every bump in the night!
