Thank you all for signing this petition. It shows how much the community is vested in the welfare of our school system. We all deeply care for it's success and the success of our students — a reflection on our whole community. You probably already know that the BOE has decided to appoint the new Board member. We hope you will be able to attend the public forums to meet and learn more about the candidates interested in the position. For schedule, please visit:http://www.sagharborschools.org/We also hope the public forum will help Sag Harbor's BOE make a unanimous decision that will benefit the welfare of the school and the entire community.

According to an article in 27 east: "A special election would cost the district approximately $3,500,
assuming it lasts about 10 hours, said Superintendent of Schools Dr.
John Gratto. A typical district election—in which the budget is also up
for a vote, along with board seats—usually lasts about 14 hours. The
election this past May cost $7,655, he said."Bryan Boyhan, in his editorial in the Sag Harbor Express this week, misinformed his readers by stating the election would cost $8,000. Yes, it would be great if the BOE could decide unanimously to appoint, but the key word here is unanimous. However, we still believe members should be replaced through an
election process. Do you? Please sign and urge others to sign as well. Let's show the board the community wants to vote for their school board representative.

We would like to present the Board with this petition by end of day tomorrow (Friday August 3rd), and can use many more signatures. If you miss this deadline, please continue to sign anyway. Please pass the word and forward to as many people as you can telling them how important it is to protect their right to vote. With 5 potential candidates, it is clear that an election is needed. One signer says it well: "Elected School Board members should be just that." Thank you, everyone, for standing up for the right thing.

Since Walter resigned officially on July 2, the election must be held by Sept. 30. With 45 days advance notice - that would be no later than August 16 to announce. Candidates then must file petitions 30 days prior to the election in order to qualify. So there is very little time. If the board waits until August 13 to call an election, it will be a scramble. We hope this petition will help prompt the Board to announce an election sooner than later!

School Board Member, Mary Anne Miller, recently posted the following answers to questions asked on Facebook. We are posting the information here as well, in case you do not have access to facebook. ____The BOE has three options with respect to filling the vacancy on the board. 1. Do nothing and wait until next election in May to fill the seat. 2. Conduct a Special Election now to fill the vacancy. 3. Appoint a willing participant. The cost of the annual school district election in May is approximately $7500. A special election could run the same or less, depending on the number of hours the polls are open, amount of staff needed to work the polls etc. The district is required to keep maintain a healthy "Fund Balance" from year to year, so there are funds available for these types of "unexpected" expenses. If a person is appointed to fill the seat now, he/she would only hold the seat until May 2013. The seat would then be open and available again for a three year term and would be...
