On March 2, 2013, Cadhan Brown, a pitcher on a 13U travel baseball team, was hit in the eye by a bullet….a line drive hit by a batter using a composite bat just 54’ away. He had no time to react…to get his glove up…to protect himself. A miracle happened as Cadhan did not lose his eyesight or suffer serious head trauma. Although surgery is necessary to repair numerous fractures to his eye socket, sinus and cheek areas, he will fully recover. If the ball had hit him less than one-half inch to the right, the hit could have been fatal. Parents, family and friends of travel baseball players understand the inherent risks of the game, and are willing to accept reasonable risks. They are NOT willing to accept the risk artificially inserted in the game by those who alter metal and composite bats in order to gain a competitive edge for themselves or their team. They are NOT willing to accept the danger posed by boys who have matured beyond their years and are using metal or composite bats on smaller fields. Due to the difficulties in discovering altered bats on the fielt, the following people urge all organizations in charge of competitive youth baseball tournaments to require all players, age 12 and older, to use BBCOR bats in competitive and travel ball competitions.
