I support creating educational choices for Brockton’s families. I support a tuition-free, high quality, college-prep charter public school. This is why I support the application for the International Charter School of Brockton, a rigorous college prep program, based on the SABIS academic system, proposed for opening fall 2014, serving students in grades K-5 (growing by a grade level each year to K-12).

Brockton, Massachusetts, is the 7th largest city in the state with 93,810 residents and it is the only "gateway" city in the state without a charter public school.  Brockton is a racially diverse city and although the city's population is 43% white, the city's school system is 74% minority. For the past four years, the elementary grade levels have seen an increase in the failure rates as measured by the state's MCAS exam. The graduation rate for minority students hovers around 69%, it's 62% for Latinos, and a mere 33% for students with disabilities. Only 58% of black students are considered "proficient" in math by 10th grade. Despite the city's over all racial diversity, white families are clearly exercising educational choice by sending their kids to private/parochial schools, while minority students struggle in the regular school system. Don't minority families also deserve an opportunity to access a quality education?  The International Charter School will bring needed competition to Brockton's public schools.  It's time to give all of Brockton's families different educational options!
