Name: Robert Bononno on Jun 24, 2010Comments: The Cathedral of the Holy Virgin at 59 East 2nd Street is one of the treasures of our local community. It deserves to be given landmark designation to protect it from neglect or modification. The City has been losing its historical buildings at an alarming rapid pace through unchecked development and neglect. We want to preserve our neighborhood the way it is. The Chuch is vital to our identity and remarkable example of fine architecture in its own right.Flag

Name: Barry Moreno on Jun 24, 2010Comments: As a historian at the the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, I believe It absolutely vital that the Russian Orthodxox Cathedral be declared a landmark. This historic edifice is an intimate part of New York's rich ethnic background and tells another side of the story that we sledom hear, that of the Slavic Christians.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jun 25, 2010Comments: As residents of the Lower East Side / East Village, we urge Manhattan Community Board 3 to support designation of the historic Russian Orthodox Cathedral, at 59-63 East 2nd Street, as an individual landmark of the City of New York. The Cathedral was constructed in 1867, designed by the renowned architect Josiah Cleveland Cady, who later designed the Metropolitan Opera House and the auditorium of the American Museum of Natural History. The Cathedral fits as an historic whole with the already-landmarked Marble Cemetery across East 2nd Street.Flag

As an owner of a landmarked building, The Calvert Vaux Children's Aid Society, Newsboys and Bootblacks Lodging on East 8th Street, I welcome the campaign to preserve this historic structure. It is a stunning edifice.Flag
