The Petition
East Village Community Coalition (EVCC)
As residents of the Lower East Side / East Village, we urge Manhattan Community Board 3 to support designation of the historic Russian Orthodox Cathedral, at 59-63 East 2nd Street, as an individual landmark of the City of New York. The Cathedral was constructed in 1891, designed by the renowned architect Josiah Cleveland Cady, who later designed the Metropolitan Opera House and the auditorium of the American Museum of Natural History. The Cathedral fits as an historic whole with the already-landmarked Marble Cemetery across East 2nd Street.
