Name: Sarah Elizabeth Kennedy on Feb 9, 2010Comments: I took a class with Professor Mize in the spring of my junior year called "Latinos and the Law." It was a terrific course, and Professor Mize led some of the most intellectually rigorous discussions I've yet seen at Cornell, drawing on a diverse range of studies in addition to sociology. Furthermore, he showed each student respect and listened with full attention to all opinions voiced in the classroom. He asked important--and challenging--questions of his students, urging them to think critically about what he and other professors at Cornell have to say. Professor Mize also put tremendous emphasis on the importance of developing our research skills, especially with the Cornell libraries at our disposal, and he put great effort into writing detailed responses to all of our papers. I do not know for what reason(s) Professor Mize was denied tenure, but I hope that the University will reconsider this decision. Ron Mize is a tremendous asset to the Sociology Department and to the University at large.Flag

This course was undoubtedly one of the best in my time at Cornell, and Professor Mize was excellent at engaging and challenging the students. The way in which material was presented and the way in which we were examined were creative and interesting. The course materials and readings were both spot on in terms of communicating the concepts central to the course, and also interesting enough that I wanted to read them. Most importantly, however, Professor Mize is the kind of teacher who truly cares about students' learning and progress. It would be a shame for Cornell to lose such a valuable asset to students' education. I truly hope that the Department reconsiders, so that future Cornellians can benefit from this great professor.Flag
