Mr. Romney, as candidate for the presidency of the United States, you have brought up the question of who pays taxes and who does not on many occasions. Recently a video emerged where you state unequivocally that 47 percent of Americans do not pay federal taxes and essentially freeload on those of us who do. You say "those people" think of themselves as "victims" and that they are unwilling to take "personal responsibility and care for their lives." You offer no insight as to who those people are, or what their lives are about, but you discuss their motives and aspirations in terms of unwillingness to pay their fair share and questionable personal ethics. Fairness and responsibility are obviously important to your view of America, its needs, and what your policy on taxes will be should you be elected president. As you make clear, taxes, who pays, what they pay, what they should pay, and why, are important, and reflect on our image and understanding of who we are as citizens and individuals. However, notwithstanding numerous requests you do not feel that it is in the interest of the American people or of any real importance (politically or ethically) to know what taxes you have paid over the last 5 or 10 years. You have assured us personally that you pay your share. This is an issue that also came up when you ran for senator and then governor of Massachusetts. In each case there were discrepancies between your public assurances and your tax declarations. Given that you have impressed upon us the importance of who pays and what they pay, in terms of personal and public responsibility, of fairness, we the undersigned believe that it is of fundamental importance to the American people, that you to release your tax returns for the past 7 years. Mr. Romney show us what you have paid in federal taxes over the last 7 years.
