The Petition

FACTS

Nearly 20 years after the fall of Communism enabled Romania to experience the most rapid economic growth in our nation's history, millions of street dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys are left in our streets to live on refuse.

Animals who are impounded as strays are typically incarcerated in concentration camps, where they have little or no chance to enjoy a good life and be adopted. They die of disease, starvation, or injuries suffered in fighting for scraps of bad food.

Romania urgently needs a national animal birth control program, similar to those of nations such as India and Costa Rica, to humanely prevent our animal surplus.

For the animals already born, Romania urgently needs animal shelters that meet the norms of the European Union.

At little more cost than maintaining the present ineffective system, Romania could provide subsidized sterilization to reduce the numbers of strays, and could operate quality shelters to house animals who must be impounded.

Please help us petition our president to introduce these much-needed reforms.

LETTER

To the President of Romania and the members of the government.

Dear Sirs,

The tragedy of Romanian animals left to starve and die on the streets or in pounds operating as animal concentration camps is deeply upsetting to me and harmful to the reputation of Romania.

This problem could be resolved by providing public funding for pet sterilization, so that no animals are born without good homes to go to, and by enforcing shelter standards equivalent to those of most other European Union nations.

Thank you!
