Rocky Mount Elementary in Marietta GA has instituted a new policy in the lunchroom. For the 20 minute lunch period, students are to alternately remain quiet (silent) for 5 minutes, and then talk quietly for 5 minutes. This alternating pattern allows the children to concentrate on eating and then quietly socialize with each other. After 20 minutes, then children go out to covered play area, where they can socialize for another 10 minutes before returning to class. Using this system allows the children time to both eat and talk, without the need for the lunchroom staff to constantly fuss at the children about getting too loud.
