Name: David Euscher on Jul 24, 2006Comments: a high rise of any sort would be inappropriate for this location in terms of the scale adjacent to the River Oaks neighborhood, and for the traffic problems that would be made even worse than they are today. The River Oaks Shopping center is a gateway between the residential avenues of River Oaks and the city blocks of downtown Hosuton. The curved retail wings make the intersection of Shepard and West Gray a landmark in itself, and Houston's city scape would be diminished without it. The River Oaks theater is one of the few intimate theaters in town, that is regularly busy with moviegoers and often shows films that other megaplexes won't show. Losing this site would mean losing an important cultural outlet, as well as a landmark of art deco design. The Alabama theater, now a Bookstop, is also one of the unique shopping experiences in town, and a pleasure to shop in, having the feel of an independent bookshop, without the anonymous "Anywhere USA" character of a Barnes & Noble. B&N would be well served to keep this one unique retail experience in their portfolio. My morning commute wouldn't be the same without driving down that particular stretch of Shepard. Whe I returned to Houston, after several years of living away, these places were welcome sights, making me feel at home once again. These places are viable retail locations and some of the last few places on Houston of historic interest from their time. Please Do NOT demolish the River Oaks Shopping Center, River Oaks Theater, or the Alabama theater, they are historically, culturally, and commercially valuable, and deserve to be preserved.Flag
