Since the beginning of the school year, there is a select group of parents who park near the Oak Street entrance and remain on school grounds after they have escorted their children safely into the building. This poses a safety issue to the remaining students and parents who must also drop their children off as the number of parking spaces is very limited. Currently, there are situations where some parents double park on Oak Street just to get their children into the building otherwise they would have to park at the end of the street towards Loy Avenue. This same group of mothers who insist on remaining on school grounds have now become an obstruction to the Preschool children and their parents who must walk thru them at the entrance. Furthermore, Mrs. Zemaitis's assistants are unable to react and get to the preschool children as quickly which is necessary to avoid accidents or injuries to the children. We would like to see more parents use the kiss and drop location so they will not take up parking spaces. For those who insist that they walk their children to the school entrance, we ask that school staff instruct those parents to leave the school grounds once their children are safely indoors. There are always teachers at the Oak Street entrance to monitor children once inside and legally, once inside, children are in custody of the school. Doing so will make more spaces available for other parents and lessen traffic and the potential for serious injury. Something must be done. By way of this petition, the undersigned parents are requesting the Riverdale Public School and its Board Members to act swiftly and with force to prevent this issue from continuing. The Riverdale Police Department has been consulted with by a concerned parent and Police Chief Soules is only waiting for direction from the school board to act. Please act now.
