Help Fix the RIT Residential Mealplans

“If students demand it, we will do it. It takes students organizing and saying ‘we want this’ or ‘we want that.’ It takes students going to the administration asking ‘why can’t this be?’ To revamp the meal plans or something along those lines, it’s got to be driven by the students.”

-Craig Neil, Director of Residential Food Service

It is in this spirit that we, as students, aim to fix the Residential Mealplan. It is clear that the current mealplans are not equitable and unfair to students. Reporter Magazine has reported on this issue and has found that students are receiving $190.00 and $76.00 less than they should in debit each quarter. This inequality has no justification and is easily remedied -- RIT only needs to give students what they pay for. Thus, as students paying for these meal plans which are required for all students in the residence halls, we demand that RIT resolves this issue and appropriates Food Debit as follows:

- Any 10 Plus - 10 meals per week; 5 meal options; $350.00 in debit. ($190.00 increase over status quo)

- Any 12 Plus - 12 meals per week; 5 meal options; $195.00 in debit. ($75.00 increase over status quo)

- Any 14 Plus - 14 meals per week; 5 meal options; $40.00 in debit.

The justification for these amounts can be found at www.reformrit.com as well as in the Reporter article at www.reportermag.com.

In signing this petition then, the students of RIT aim to send a message to the administration that taking our money before we even receive it and disenfranchising freshmen is simply not acceptable. We will not stand for it, and expect resolution in a timely manner. We pay for it, and we deserve it.

Explanation of the Any 14 Meal Plan debit amount: Many students have noted that the proposed revisions would cut back on the amount of debit these students currently receive. This is, in part, correct. The bigger picture here is that this is how the mealplans really should be--we're not just trying to give students more money, we're trying to give them the money they deserve and already pay for. Also, something to consider is that with these changes, many students will probably be much more attracted to the Any 10 and Any 12 meal plan. Give up two meals a week and you'll receive $155.00 additional dollars in debit. In the end, this solution makes the meal plans equal and gives all students what they pay for. We believe that is a worthy cause.
