Name: Peter King on Feb 14, 2006Comments: I lead heritage walks in the Brentford area and always mention the possible loss of this part of the towns history. Canals and rivers are seeing more craft, and from a practical point of view we should be keeping this amenity. I fully support those wishing to retain this boatyard.State:Country: UKFlag

Name: Nick Symes on Feb 14, 2006Comments: brentford needs to maintain sites like ridgeways boatyard, that link the new developed areas to the towns strong historic boatbuilding past. it could be a genuine benefit to the town, and once lost will soon stop being even a memory. as a boatowner, and being involved in the marine industry, I use and come across people who use Brentford Marine Services all acroos the South East region. they provide a valuable service to an important sector, but it is not a profitable one, and if local authorities don't stand up to protect them, they stand little chance in the hands of businesses and developers. of course it's nice to have houses near waterways but houses can be anywhere; marine and river businesses cannot. act to save them.State:Country: UKFlag

Name: Paul Phare on Feb 14, 2006Comments: I consider Brentford boatyard to be an important part of Brentford's heritage which also provides a visual amenity and a welcome relief from new development for those living by and using the canal. Developers should not be allowed to destroy such a small yet significant part of Brentford's character which has taken years to establish for the sake of a quick buckState:Country: UKFlag

Name: Gillian Olcay on Feb 14, 2006Comments: I am a director in both Brentford Marine Services and Brentford Yacht & Boat Co, both operating out of Ridgeways Wharf. Brentford Marine Services first came here in 1990, while the original BY&B Co. started here in 1954. I have noted from early records that planning consents were obtained from the Council for boatbuilding sheds from 1952, and for many years BY&B operated boat hire services. There is so much we could do more in providing for increased public enjoyment of the surrounding waterways if we were only sure of our security here. Our previous landlord company has been driven into liquidation by the developers anxious to obtain vacant possession of the site, and we ourselves will inevitably now face similar moves to destroy us. Only if the Council confirms that the historic use of this site must be protected, will the reasons for attempting to render the site derelict be nullified. So much of what we offer fits in so well with the stated general preferences published, but my fear is that these are SO general, that when the time comes to implement them, any scheme can find ways to boast that they conform. The same sort of words are used by British Waterways and BTC Ltd to promote their schemes, - "revitilising the waterside", "bringing new energy & excitement" to the area etc. When we look at the proposals in detail, we see nothing to actually support these encomiums. So much has been destroyed with the recent waterside developments around the lock, with much of the flats being bought by overseas investors and none but a couple of the many new retail outlets being taken up. The potential for boating activity is actually reduced with half the waterspace in front of the island being now taken up with permanent moorings, (largely populated by boaters fleeing the uncertain situation we face!). The policies both of BW and the London Canals Committee advocate off-line moorings rather than taking up the canalside, and this is precisely what WE offer, aside from boat repair and maintenance. Please do whatever possible to ensure that the preferred options in the New Plan are clear and specific, and to guarantee that this last canalside boatyard is saved for the benefit of all generations to come. If you fail to protect it now, the Town Centre's last living link to the canal and river will be gone for all time.State:Country: UKFlag

Name: Emma Burke on Feb 15, 2006Comments: I had the pleasure of staying at the Brentford Boatyard last October. As a visitor from Australia it was amazing to experience such a unique part of English culture. It would be a very sad thing to see another part of English history washed into the Thames. Tourists visiting England do not come to see apartment blocks or shopping malls, please show some respect for the beauty of your own country and help to restore not destroy such important pieces of English history.State:Country: AUFlag

Name: Peter Makower on Feb 15, 2006Comments: As a boat owner on the Tideway, where there are hardly any repair yards left, I strongly urge the protection and enhancement of those few boatyards that are left, like Ridgeways. The fact that Ridgeways is above Thames Lock is irrelevant, because I can always get there whenever the Tideway is navigable up to Thames Lock. So please DON'T let Ridgeways be annexed by some purely landside use which could go anywhere. Boatyards have to be by the water.State:Country:Flag

Name: Mark Scorer on Feb 17, 2006Comments: As a local boat owner/client of Ridgeways, I am very concerned that they may be forced out of business. They have been engaged in the last 12 months in conducting major improvements to my boat 'Seacrest'. It is my aim to bring the boat up to a very high standard, in keeping with the improving environment of the Hollows. The boat is wooden and over 50 years old and I feel responsible for maintaining this part of our heritage. Ridgeways work has been of the highest quality and conducted with calm efficiency and professionalism. The loss of such a good boat yard will make it all the more difficult for us, as boat owners in maintaining our boats to an appropriate standard.State:Country: UKFlag

Name: EARLE FRANKLIN TEITLER on Feb 19, 2006Comments: The River Thames has for thousands of years, well before the Romans founded Londinium, been a source of commerce, transport, boating and boat building/repairs; and, an artery of life for the people living on its banks. Without boatyards and boat repair facilities, this life blood artery for the people could not exist. The Thames belongs to all of the people of London and not just to supermarket operators and property speculators who have only recently become interested in the Thames. Ridgeway Wharf is one of the last remaining boatyards on the upper Tidal Thames and if it is to disappear, where will the neighbouring Thames resident houseboat dwellers (representative of families who have lived on the Thames for thousands of years) have their vessels repaired Further, not saving BrentfordState:Country: UKFlag
