Dear RGS class of 2010,

As we all know, in the Academic Report and EOY reports issued to us, only the Grade Points for both our own scores and the median were displayed. This presents several problems:

 1. The range of scores for each GP is quite large, and this disadvantages people who have gotten a significantly high percentage / missed the next band by a mark or so but still have their grades displayed as the same as someone who barely made the band.

 2. In university admissions, only the JC1, 2 and Sec4 academic transcripts are taken into consideration. Sec1-3 results are mostly ignored. The mainstream would have taken part in the O levels, which is a recognised international examination whose standard is maintained stringently (i.e. an A1 carries with it a whole set of presumptions about your academic prowess) but the RP is virtually unknown outside of Singapore, so you do need the median percentages to benchmark your standard. However, when the median is merely listed as a GP, there is no way for any outsider to accurately gauge your score. Other schools such as RI and HCI have acknowledged this problem and do provide percentages on their students' report slips.

3. The band descriptors given at the bottom of the report are rather ambiguous and might cause someone who doesn't know the system to think that the system is inflationary. For example, 3.6 is described as "Excellent" and 4.0 as "Distinguished". Now bearing in mind that the average GPs of almost all the subjects are 3.6 or 4.0, anyone might think that every other student in RGS is excellent or distinguished, and that you are nothing exceptional as you achieved the same GP. If the percentages were displayed, on the other hand, people would be able to accurately judge how much better or worse than everyone in the batch.

While we acknowledge that it is not logistically possible to reprint everyone's scores, we feel that it is still worth to draw the principals' attention to this problem so that it may be rectified for future batches.

We request you sign this petition if you agree with our points of view. Do feel free to circulate this among your friends (: Once we have gathered enough signatures, it will be sent to the principals. Thank you!

Note: Please make sure that you tick the box that says "Show my name in the online list" so that it looks credible when the principals view it. Thanks (:
