Comments: These words of Krugman are regrettably like a voice in the wilderness. Apart from the natural tendency to hold on to what we have always done, the allocation of resources to economic research is still very much skewed in the direction of the 'beauty' Krugman speaks of. It is important that we who teach the discipline and who hold an alternative view keep showing by our own example that the real beauty and the power of economics lies in the ideas which are spawned and in the relevance of these ideas to the problems that real people in real economies face everyday.

Comments: Economics is concerned with demand and supply. But what good is it to increase the demand, and thus the supply if the outcome is unsustainable destruction? I'm referring to public manipulation such as terrorism by the media, and disputes about access to non-renewable resources resulting in arm sales benefitting the military-industrial complex. According to a study by the 'Society of Friends' 44.4% of US 2009 taxes goes on current military spending. An increasing numbers of Americans live in poverty, and there is little money in the US to reduce the effects of Climate Change. What is the role of economists in working towards a more socially just world where people, and the environment, matters?

Comments: Hey, I wanna “start a riot, yes I can ….” And here’s my wishlist for the economics fraternity, may we morph faster from the still currently “excessive formalism” to “sophisticated informality”. Let’s get real, let’s make economics serve us with finesse. For in the fresh crises of our times, I suppose it’s urgent need for us to initiate a whole new “intellectual revolution”, of authentic thinking, to explore everything differently to grow a better world this 21st century. Cheerios, Ms Mona Chew 22 April 2011.
