Name: David Vroland on Oct 15, 2007Comments: The revision weekends with which I have been involved have been well attended and I personally have found them to be highly engaging and an invaluable resource. I strongly value the opportunity to meet face to face with my peers and the lecturers and whilst the materials provided via DSO are doubtless of high quality I believe there is ultimately no substitute for live interaction. I would argue that it is a combination of all of these elements which has manufactured the excellent reputation the Deakin Off-Campus program currently enjoys.Flag

Name: Kevin Said on Oct 15, 2007Comments: Indeed the Revision Weekends may not be of value to some students. I also accept that it is economically difficult to provide and or justify this learning/ teaching method with low attendances. I come from Singapore to attend these sessions. To date they have been valuable enough for me to spend AUD 1,000 to attend each weekend. My attendance may vary or change if the quality changes. This too might be a reason for people not attending Has there been any QA done to see how much of a contributing factor If you cancel Revision Weekends, what substitute learing/ teaching method would you employ for those Chums who do get value out of these sessions Will we get a discount on our fees given the cost savings from not having the Revision Weekends Lastly, surely these weekends, regardless of the economics are an integral part of the Off Campus value proposition My view, and the few who attend, believe they are and without them, the value proposition for studying off campus at Deakin severly diminshes. Thank you, KevinFlag

The Revision weekends is a necessity. It mainly guides you on how to answer questions for the impending exams.I love it.Flag

Name: Sasha Goudie on Oct 15, 2007Comments: I am very upset at this news, as the revision weekends are the only time I have face to face interaction with other students and lecturers. It is very hard as an off-campus student sometimes, and having that contact with others who are in the 'same boat', usually juggling work with uni, is extremely valuable. I have been studying at Deakin as an off-campus student for approximately 6 years and I have seen a lot of positive progression. This decision, unfortunately, is a giant step backwards.Flag

Name: Stuart Day on Oct 16, 2007Comments: Revision weekends are a great help for me as an off-campus student. To actually meet other students and be able to discuss things with them is a huge help on top of the benefits of actually hearing/talking to the lecturors. This is a must for me and should be kept for future students.Flag

Name: Stuart MacDonald on Oct 16, 2007Comments: I have only been able to attend one of these weekends due to living in Darwin for most of the year. I found that the revision weekend really switched me into gear and greatly improved my learning ability by listening to other's questions and hearing different perpectives on some issues enhanced my knowledge. I will most likely not attend one in the next few years as I will be living overseas, but when I come back I look forward to attending again.Flag

They are a great opportunity to meet lecturers face to face and to catch up with other students. If attendance numbers are down maybe relocation to Burwood campus should be considered.Flag

Name: Claire Kowarsky on Oct 16, 2007Comments: I cannot stress enough how important the revision weekends are to me. It is just not the same to post questions on DSO to get the answers later - the immediacy of face to face contact and direct repsonse is invaluable. Furthermore, the revision weekends are the only opportunity many of us have to build a support network of fellow students - not just for during university but as future peers. It is undoubtedly demanding balancing uni and work/ family committments, in a totally different way to first time students. It can be stressful at times, and it helps immensely if you know other students personally to talk it through. I feel very passionately about this. We are not machines - to be fed information through the internet, but rather humans with social and emotional needs intrinsically linked to our quest for knowlege. Kindest regards, ClaireFlag

Name: Kim Murdock on Oct 16, 2007Comments: I have been studying for almost three years as an off-campus student, with another three to go. I live in Tasmania and find the revision weekends a vital part of my course. They undoubtedley 'gel' all the semester's work together for me and give me a 'heads-up' on what areas I need to focus more work in. Please do not cancel these weekends, they help us off-campus students stay in touch with fellow students and academic staff. It is suprising what a difference putting a face to a lecturers voice / name can make. Thank you. Kim MurdockFlag

Name: David Cocks on Oct 16, 2007Comments: To cancel the revision weekends would be a travesty. If the university prides itself on offering off-campus students a genuine alternative to on-campus study (as it should and I'm sure does), it must understand that these weekends are a fundamental aspect of off-campus study and must be retained.Flag

Name: Gordon Porter on Oct 16, 2007Comments: I totally agree with the comments above. I have a good distinction average but believe I would have struggled and probably failed a number of subjects had it not been for the revision weekends. I have attended each one that I could and they have all been beneficial to me. From a students perspective it is quite incomprehendible why Deakin Law would want to remove a valuable learning tool from their arsenal. Money can be the only answer, yet they force students to waste thousands of $$$ to attend ADR which could be easily accommodated for via technology, especially when some students come from Japan and other far fung places. Revision Weekends should be better promoted by the uni not ditched.Flag

Name: Stephanie Clota on Oct 19, 2007Comments: I believe that the revision weekends are an invaluable resource for off campus students, not only to come and learn about the subjects but also to get together and talk about life as a law student. As I am based it another State and working full time, it is not possible for me to attend on campus lectures, therefore without these weekends I would never have the opportunity to seek advice or assistance from the lectures in person. It is my opinion that without these weekends we (the off campus students) would be even more disadvantaged than our fellow on campus students than what we presently are. We pay fees and donFlag
