Name: Valerie Van De Wint on Jun 6, 2010Comments: October 2008 the Island's trust executive council vetoed the Galiano land use bylaws which were three years in the making. The executive council's ability to override the work of the democratically elected island trustees has taken away my faith in island politics. The council defeated the bylaws by one vote as a member had left the meeting to go to his daytime job. Three years of work by diligent islanders went down the drain and the conservation lobbiests were victorious in keeping one group of property owners unfairly discriminated against. The Galiano conservation lobby group works full time, often on government grants, but usually on private grants given by well meaning but misinformed groups who believe the conservationists' "we are preserving the island" line. Many of the conservationists projects, for example, the erection of decaying trees to serve the birds and wildlife, are make work publicity projects! Everyone is busy working for the "cause" but the projects have no lasting benefit to the island. Conservation is the newest religion with many of its edicts baised purely on faith and supposition. Galiano can have no cell phone relay tower because such a presence will cause the deforming of fetuses. Hard to believe in this day and age? Come to a Galiano Conservancy Association meeting and then watch these members take over the local trust meetings. I have been told by my neighbours that they will not visit my berry farm because I logged land in the agriculture reserve to creat the farm fields in the early 1990's. My neighbors are farming on land cleared in the early part of the twentieth century. All of us are creating crops but my organic crop is somehow tainted in the eyes of the conservancy members because the lands sold by MacMillan Bloedel in the early 90's should have been theirs!!Flag

Name: William B Lynd on Jun 6, 2010Comments: Agree that it is well beyond the time for a major review. However as long as the government is afraid to touch it for fear of upsetting the conservationists it likely won't happen. The only chance for a real honest and objective review is to have a Judge as chairperson select a committee that truly reflects the citezenary and prepare a report for the property owners on the Islands. The report should then be reviewed and voted on.Flag

Name: Bea Robson on Jun 6, 2010Comments: The Islands Trust is expected to "Preserve and Protect" by providing guidelines which are informed, clear, and consistent. Instead, an emotion based bureaucracy has developed, bewildering in its complexity and inefficiency, and proving to be both divisive and unfair. My husband and I have owned property on Galiano since 1979 and lived there full time for 13 years, leaving to seek the tranquility of Vancouver. To add insult to injury, this year our municipal levies increased by 30%.Flag

Name: Mary Elliott on Jun 6, 2010Comments: I have lived under the "rule" of the Galiano Islands Trust for 33 years and and I can honestly say the Trust is the most undemocratic government I have ever experienced. What with: important (downzoning) bylaws made under RWM (resolutions without meeting) with no consultation or compensation to property owners - Bylaws passed by local trustees and rejected by Trust Council. Blatant favoritism shown in land use decisions made to voter friends and unreasonable bylaws made for non-voter friends. The Islands Trust seem to want more and more power - witnessed by their requests to Provincial Government for control over Provincial Jurisdictions, such as Roads, Forestry, Water, Building Permits, Agriculture, etc. This is scary. Last but not least, we pay more Taxes for Islands Trust than: GRD Hospital, CRD, Fire Protection. Police, etc. and what services does the Trust Give Us? I have not witnessed any indication of "preserve and protect" in 33 years. A review of the Islands Trust Act is long overdue.Flag

(Galiano dropping to -25 students)...we cannot have a viable community with such restrictive measures advocated by the present Islands Trust. Young people cannot afford to purchase property.....Flag

Name: Conny Nordin on Jun 6, 2010Comments: The Islands Trust, at the beginning, provided a needed role in ensuring that the special environment and rural nature of life on the islands was protected from over development, but it is time for a review. Because, unfortunately, the Trust has deteriorated into a controlling organization, creating burdensome regulations without regard to the people who work and live here. They have forgotten that "rural" means rural people, families, jobs and small businesses. Galiano is an island where families who had settled here before the Trust cannot live in a house on 160 acres. Is there something wrong with that? Or even 50 acres or 20? The people who depend on farming and fishing and tourism businesses on the island are hampered by unnecessary regulations creating unbelievable financial burdens. It is time for a review of the Islands Trust.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Jun 7, 2010Comments: When we purchased our property in 1999, we had ideas of building a small cabin and enjoying the peace and natural beauty on Galiano Island. Through the abuse of power by a group with their own agenda who control the politics of the Island, we are caught in a polarized situation which looks to have no viable solution. We now have a lovely campsite and are under the watchful eyes of this group. Reviewing the Islands Trust Act and removing their absolute power would go a long way to returning peace to Galiano Island and as I read the comments, other islands as well.Flag

Name: Dan Stoneman on Jun 7, 2010Comments: All government should be a balance of community interests. The Islands Trust's Act is absent of such balance. The original intent of the Act to guide development with respect for the environment within the islands has been lost hijacked by a group of environmental extremists trying to "save the world."Flag

Name: Robert Toohey on Jun 7, 2010Comments: not impressed by this latest go around with Gambier Islands Trust, OCP 'input'. It seems the desired outcome was well set before public input was sought. Taxes are very high, services are non existent, and Islands Trust can't be trusted. I support a reno on the tired hippy bureaucrats.Flag

Name: Veronica Moyle on Jun 7, 2010Comments: A regulation that disallows a land owner of 160 acres to build a home on his/her land is shameful. Where else in Canada would you find a similar restrictive regulation? We don't have a large enough population on Galiano to support a viable community (school, health center and local businesses).......there is a need for change.Flag

Islands Trust is making and Associated Island OCP but is ramming it through without being responsive to the stakeholders. Taxes are very high without any services. If we can't bring in new people to defray the taxes these Islands will only be for the rich.Flag
