Sony Online Entertainment recently announced that they have made massive cutbacks, and have subsequently cancelled their highly-anticipated new MMO shooting game, 'The Agency'.

The Agency is a massively-multiplayer online spying game set in a glamorous, tongue-in-cheek, persistent world of espionage and intrigue. New players must choose between one of two agencies: The United Network of Intelligence and Tactical Experts (U.N.I.T.E), a collective of spies, technologists and secret agents, and The Paramilitary Global Operations Network (ParaGON), consisting of soliders, weapons experts and guns-for-hire. U.N.I.T.E. offers a more stealthy, diplomatic and strategic style of gameplay, whereas ParaGON leads to more intense firefights and all-out-action. Each agency has its own story arc that interweaves with the other, and depending on the mission, the two agencies may need to work together or in opposition. The world also features a number of appropriately stereotypical villains and antagonists with dirty work to be done, or devilish schemes to be foiled.

This is only the tip of the game's iceberg of features, such as character classes that can be swapped on-the-fly, first- and third-person viewpoints, spectacular cartoonish visuals, and AI phantom agents that can be commissioned to carry out missions while the player is away, reporting back on their progress via email or text messages in real time. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-the-agency/50841 The game is the result of 5 years of work, and was planned for a late 2011 release. With such a near release date, the game couldn't have been far from completion. This cancellation means that all of the game's material and source code will be archived, probably never to be seen again. We believe that it would be a travesty to let this game become 'vaporware'. We also see this as a great opportunity for the open source and linux communities, who have no access to the sort of experience or techniques found in the professional video game industry. This is a petition for one of the following outcomes

1. Sony Online Entertainment to reconsider their decision and return the game to active development
2. Sony Online Entertainment to release the source code and supporting materials into the public domain for continued development by the open source community

This is a chance for Sony Online Entertainment to listen to its fans and give a tremendous gesture of support to its community. This game could be an incredible experience - it would be a dreadful shame to let it be forgotten.
