We, the undersigned, would like to see the addition of restroom facilities to the trailer area of Westgate Elementary School.
While we understand the use of trailers at Westgate Elementary School is necessary during renovations, the lack of restroom facilities in the area of these trailers is disruptive to the children's school day and has the potential to be unhealthy.
Currently, all of the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students are taught in trailers. These students must walk into the main building in order to use the restroom. This walk is not particularly short—much further than students in the building would walk—and students are sent in pairs for safety. This means that two students must leave class for an extended period for every restroom visit. This reduces classroom instruction time.
Furthermore, in cold and inclement weather, students may not be as likely to ask for permission to use the restroom because the walk is unpleasant. This could lead to accidents in younger children or bladder infections in all ages.
In light of these issues, we would like FCPS to add one or more restroom facilities to the trailer area of Westgate Elementary School.
