Dear Mr. Mangano, We the residents of Woodmere, North Woodmere, Hewlett, Cedarhurst (The 5 Town Area) are turning to you in desperation. We no longer feel safe in our homes, cars, or on our streets. In the last 2 years we have had an enormous rise in crime in our area. There have been burglaries, robberies, and assaults in our once very safe, family friendly area on the South Shore of Nassau County. Many of us have been already burglarized, robbed and assaulted and the rest are terrified and fear we are next. Not a day passes by that we don’t hear from our neighbors about new burglaries and/or assaults in the 5 Towns. We are afraid for our safety, the safety of our children and the elderly. Not only the above mentioned offenses have not been solved, but there is an almost 100% rise of the crimes in our area (Police district 4), however it is no longer reflected in the data that is being shown for district 4 since now it is being combined with the data for district 5. Nevertheless, even with the combined data it is still showing a rise of 22%. Nowadays, we have multiple burglaries daily. With the crime situation in our area, we have not seen any response from our police department. The crimes that have been committed against us have not been solved. We do not see anything being done to resolve this situation and to prevent future offences from occurring. We do not have a sense of security nor are we being protected by the police. There is no street patrolling during the day or night. All we see are police officers handing out tickets in our area for traffic violations. We see parked police vehicles waiting by stop signs and standing on Peninsula Blvd. waving drivers by and handing out tickets. This is upsetting our community even more because these resources could be used to protect us. Where are all the patrol cars that we used to see a few years ago driving through our neighborhood looking out for us? Now we are afraid to go shopping, go out, run errands, and such because we know that this is when the houses are being burglarized. Based on the way the burglaries have occurred, we know that the houses are being cased and it seems as if the burglars are working in teams. Having our streets patrolled might help in solving and preventing the crimes. In this escalating situation no one has reached out to us to update us on the state of this matter. We request to know who is in charge of resolving this escalating situation and ultimately who is in charge of protecting us, the citizens of 5 Towns. We would like to know how many crimes have been solved in the last two years, what is being done to solve them, and most importantly to prevent them. Furthermore, we pay one of the highest property taxes not only in Nassau County, but in the country. Despite this, our neighborhood is no longer safe and secure. We would like to take our once safe neighborhood back. We are reaching out to you during this critical election time as our representative who we hope could help solve this terrible situation on our behalf.
