Name: Karen And Jack Herman on Nov 21, 2012Comments: The Townsman is an historic and an important voice in the Andover community! Losing it would result in the loss of an important conduit to accessing and understanding community affairs and hearing vital public discourse. Please reconsider this decision!! We need the Townsman in Andover! Community news needs to be heard!Flag

We pay close attention to articles on local government, schools, town services, community organizations and sports. The Townsman informs residents of meetings, recreation, key issues and creates a fabric for our town. Please restore funding and keep "our" paper vibrant.Flag

Name: Tom Deso on Nov 21, 2012Comments: One of the first things my wife and I did when we moved to Andover in 1984 was subscribe to the Andover Townsman. We stopped home delivery several years ago, but I still pick up the newspaper EVERY Wednesday at the Andover Spa (getting the news one day earlier than with a mail subscription). The Townsman is a lifeblood resource for information critical to Andover residents. I cannot imagine Andover without the Townsman.Flag

Name: David Brown on Nov 21, 2012Comments: I am a long-time paid subscriber of the Townsman. I've noted with dismay its diminishing coverage of local issues and government. There is little to no coverage of current developments with the Selectmen, the Planning Board, the Zoning Board (of which I am a member), or the School Committee. These are all important Boards whose work affects almost every Andover resident, yet the Townsman continues its slide toward irrelevance by failing to devote the resources to cover them. This decline becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: by not providing vital coverage of local issues, the Townsman becomes less essential to its readers, who then leave, further eroding the financial base of the paper. If this continues, at some point before long the Andover Townsman will be little more than a shopping rag, and I will not be a subscriber.Flag

Name: Karen Young on Nov 21, 2012Comments: The lack of oversight provided by the Fourth Estate puts local democracy in jeopardy. Reporters are not expensive. They are essential. Without a reporter in Andover, the Townsman editor becomes a news aggregator, not an editor. Do the responsible thing. Keep a full-time reporter on staff or lose the public trust.Flag

Name: Mark B Johnson on Nov 21, 2012Comments: Newspapers have an obligation both to shareholders as well as to the communities they cover. Editorials seek to influence public opinion and with the abiity to do so comes the responsibility to get to know communiities and to be a part of the community. Residents support local papers and local papers should support the residents by providing the resources to cover local town events and stories, not on a regional leval but on a truly local level.Flag

Name: James Sutton on Nov 21, 2012Comments: Perhaps there is some way that Community Newspapers can work with the community of Andover to keep staff adequate to cover municipal and school budget and policy issues. Adequate media coverage is necessary to the functioning of a democracy. Could a non-profit structure be set up to work with Community Newspapers to fund such coverage?Flag
