Name: Vincentia De Paul on Feb 25, 2012Affiliation:Comments: There's another element no comment seemed to address yet, the religious one. We are being pushed in general to avoid animal products, which in other contexts than dietary is promoted as the 'kind' movement and in others is simply hinduism, which began to be promoted in the sixties. Vegetarianism began its popularity then, and--I was part of it, I regret to say--we spread the word, not much caring if facts backed it up, everywhere we could, just as the liberal NYTimes still is. It was part of freeing ourselves from that mean old Catholic church and all its probitions. Eating the No Animal Products way gives a faux and easy feeling of virtue, and besides, it's cheaper, which our employers have exploited in lower wages. So I would like to add something to another signer's big three: 'virtually the opposite to what is recommended by the USDA: high fat, low carbohydrate, plenty of salt--and Catholic, thank you very much.Flag

Name: Georgia Ede MD on Feb 27, 2012Affiliation: Harvard University Health ServicesComments: Yes! While I do not disagree with anything in Ms. Parker-Pope's article, and am appreciative of her piece in that it provides much-needed validation for the biochemical differences among us that make it so much harder for some of us to lose weight than others, I, too, was astonished by the absence of a single mention of insulin or carbohydrates as critically important factors in weight and appetite control. It is true that calorie reduction and increased exercise can lead to weight loss, however, it is often much more difficult to lose weight and to maintain that weight loss without also paying attention to carbohydrate intake. I would be curious to know if she has ever tried a low-carbohydrate diet of any kind, and if so, what her experience was. My own personal, lifelong struggle with weight management has taught me the value of the carbohydrate/insulin hypothesis. If I simply lower my calories and exercise more, I do lose weight, but I am also constantly hungry and obsessed with food, and therefore, cannot sustain my efforts for very long without relapsing. However, when I lower my carbohydrate intake to less than 10 grams per meal, I can effortlessly maintain a caloric intake of 1000-1200 calories per day indefinitely. Unfortunately, I do need to also limit calories in order to lose weight; however, many people who are less carbohydrate-sensitive, or who are younger than I am, or who are male, may not need to count calories). One other important caveat: I also need to avoid dairy products in order to control my weight and appetite, and I believe this is because milk contains naturally-occuring growth hormones and insulinogenic factors which tilt our metabolism towards growth and storage. This is one of the many reasons why I do not recommend the typical "Atkins" type diet to my patients. I recommend a low-carbohydrate "Paleo" pattern diet for my patients who want to both lose weight relatively easily and improve their health.Flag

Now, it is clear that the dogma is slowly crumbling to dust and that some mind begin to open. "Consensus is not science". So, i just hope that the researchers, whatever the amount of their fundings and whatever the fame in their carreer will begin to open their mind to the science. Again.Flag

I'm eating more calories, and hence never hungry, while exercising slightly less than before. I've also seen a reduction in my triglycerides and an increase in my HDL. My LDL has gone up, also, but its pattern is strongly in the "A" range.Flag

My lipid profile had been poor (high triglycerides, low HDL, but it's now normal (low triglycerides & higher HDL), with LDLs solidly Type "A" according to the VAP cholesterol test. No more chronic heartburn, liver enzymes brought into the normal range, no more fatigue, no more obsessing about food. This is not a diet in the temporary sense; it's a permanent way to stop the creeping accumulation of excess weight in midlife.Flag
