SUPPORT NEWARK DIVERSE COMMUNITY - IMMIGRANT AND CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS PETITION Immigrant and Constitutional Rights Declaration and Community Requests on the behalf of the Iron Bound - Newark - NJ diverse community who has been suffering abuse from unqualified police officers, besides all the great efforts from the it\'s Police Chief Anthony Campos. _______________________________________________________________ WE REQUEST THE COMPLIENCE OF RESOLUTION 7RBB and the RESPECT OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT OF US CONSTITUTION by all police officers and NJ public officials. _______________________________________________________________ Newark community recognizes the efforts of Police Chief Anthony Campos and other police officers to build bridges with the community but recurring incidents jeopardize his good work and break the trust between the Newark community and it\'s police force. The comunity feels that is the failure to implement the Resolution 7RBB - a bill guaranteeing residents access to all City services without regard to their immigration status is the culprit that created the conditions which resulted in the incident on September 6th when the respected journalists Geraldo Carlos and Roberto Lima where arrested after reporting the finding of a woman body in a trash bag on Foundry Street, NJ. Asking the immigration status and aprehending the photo equipment of these two jornalists violated Resolution 7RBB and the First Amendment right of freedom of the press. Desqualified actions and the disrespect of such laws by police officers are discouraging many hard workers immigrants residing in the Iron Bound from reporting crimes and cooperate with the police to reduce the growing violence in that area. The purpose of RESOLUTION 7RBB was to safeguard and protect the rights of immigrants and to strengthen the community by building trust between community residents and local law enforcement. We respectfully request that Mayor Corey Booker, Police Director Garry McCarthy, Chief of Police Anthony Campos, City Council members and the East Ward Captain carry out the following actions: 1. Immediately issue a statement repudiating the action taken against Geraldo Carlos and Roberto Lima; 2. Assurances from Police and other City officials that they will not violate the RESOLUTION 7RBB or the FIRST AMENDMENT by asking about immigration status and uphold the protections under the first amendment of freedom of the press; 3. Attend a community meeting on October 4th at 7:00 PM at St. Stephen Grace Community Lutheran Church at Five Corners in the Ironbound to discuss these and other official actions that disadvantage local immigrants; (We are happy to inform that this request was COMPLIED by Mayor Corey Booker) 4. Meet with local leaders to: - Commit to the implementation of a training program for police and other local officials; - Assess additional measures that would improve quality of life and safety of area residents while strengthening the community and rebuilding trust; - Assign a liaison from the City and the Police who will work with community representatives on an ongoing basis; - Provide a Portuguese speaking officer in the 3rd precinct, the East Ward police station during all shifts;
