To all parents, school administrators, PTSAs and Legislators, We, the University High School PTSA in Orlando, Florida have moved forward in unison regarding a Resolution on Sports Physicals to include EKG/ECGs into sports physicals. Why, you ask? because after losing another child to sudden cardiac arrest, it has been determined that this is an all too common occurrence. On the average the United States loses approximately 100 to 1,000 young people ages 5 to 19 die of sudden cardiac arrest each year, most of them in high school. These conditions are very difficult to detect without testing. Some say ECG/EKGs can be helpful but they are not recommended in the United States. Every parent wants to reduce even the lowest risks for their son or daughter and testing is a viable option. It should be mandated in all 50 states. In the days following each teen’s death, message boards on multiple websites are always littered with the same outcry: EKGs should be required as part of athletic physicals. In Texas, it was reported that in the first year (2010) of ECG/EKG testing, 14 percent of the teens who were screened were referred to cardiac specialists for additional testing. Cost of ECG/EKG testing on laptops: 50 cents. Cost of saving a child's life: priceless. Please sign our petition.
