Recently, Oracle announced it has no further plan to invest in the open source JXTA P2P technology (initiated by Sun Microsystems in 2001). In the last 2-3 years, Sun Microsystems was already reducing its commitment. The remaining community has taken over and organized the 2.6 release. Its has now enough material to organize another release. This project has always been an open source project and lived on the contributions of many parties. Oracle now owns the 'JXTA' trademark. However, its JXTA board representative announced that Oracle won't accept the transfer of this trademark to the JXTA community or grant a right to use it. We believe this decision shows little respect and consideration for the members of the JXTA community and their efforts. We believe the JXTA community has a legitimate and natural right to claim the usage of this name. On its website (1), Oracle says: "Oracle is committed to developing, supporting, and promoting Open Source. Oracle has been, and continues to be, committed to offering choice, flexibility, and a lower cost of computing for end users." How does disengaging from an open source project and forcing the remaining community to fork it under a new name fits with the above commitment? How does this promote and support open source? It does not. This is plain contradiction. It reveals that Oracle is not willing to honor its commitments and walk its own talk. We request from Oracle to: a) either transfer of the JXTA trademark to the JXTA open source community b) or to grant the JXTA open source community an unalienable right to use the JXTA trademark This only requires a simple written statement. --- Reference: (1) http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/oracle-open-source-faq-090399.html
