PETITION FOR RENAMING OF RECREATIONAL ROAD 255W FROM HWY 96 TO HWY 63 AS SAM RAYBURN PARKWAY We, the undersigned residents and business owners of the Sam Rayburn/Brookeland community located in the unincorporated community of Sam Rayburn, Jasper County, hereby resolve the following: Recognizing that there currently is no name for the portion of Recreational Road 255W from Hwy 96 to Hwy 63; Recognizing that the community of Sam Rayburn is growing in fame across the state due to Lake Sam Rayburn, golfing, and many other recreational and professional opportunities; Recognizing that pursuant to section 225.002 of the Texas Transportation Code, Samuel Taliaferro “Sam” Rayburn is deceased and was significant both in the state’s history and in the lives of the people of this state, having served as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives of seventeen years (the longest tenure in U.S. History); and Further petitioning our Jasper County Judge Mark Allen, and our Jasper County Commissioner’s Court, to act (with the assistance of interested citizens) as local government pursuant to Chapter 225 of the Texas Transportation Code and to submit an application to the Director and to our local Texas Department of Transportation (Beaumont District) for renaming of a highway; Further petitioning our local Texas State Senator Robert Nichols and Texas State Representative James White and to introduce legislation into Section 225 of the Texas Transportation Code to state the following: Sec. 225.085 (or other appropriate numbering at the time of enaction): (a) Recreational Road 255 W in Jasper County, between State Highway 96 and State Highway 63, is designated as Sam Rayburn Parkway. (b) Subject to Section 225.021(c), the department shall: (1) design and construct memorial markers indicating the highway number, the designation as Sam Rayburn Parkway, and any other appropriate information; and (2) erect a marker at each end of the parkway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the parkway.
