Name: Helen Thomley on Feb 16, 2008Comments: The textbooks glorify Columbus as a great man and fail to tell his dirty little secrets: How he and his men fed the bodies of my ancestors' (the Tainos) children to their killer dogs; how they jokingly lined up the boys of our villages in a line and cut them in half with one blow of their Toledo swords for fun; how they pulled suckling infants from the breasts of their mothers and bashed their heads against the rocks, while the mothers watched helplessly. No... people are too quick to say, "Just get over it". Who is the real SAVAGE here You be the judge.Flag

Name: Cynthia Minde on Sep 5, 2008Comments: Columbus should be taken off and the real holiday should be Native American Day. Is it to much to ask to give our Natives a day among all the others to celebrate. After all they were here long before Columbus, They are the ones who actually discoverd America but yet they were all ready here.Flag

Name: Caitlin Mac Iver on Oct 9, 2010Comments: I wish this petition included the following, which I quote from article found at http://www.indigenouspeople.net/russmean.htm.: "...[W]e are advocating that the divisive Columbus Day holiday should be replaced by a celebration that is much more inclusive and more accurately reflective of the cultural and racial richness of the Americas. Such a holiday will provide respect and acknowledgement to every group and individual of the importance and value of their heritage, and will allow a more honest and accurate portrayal of the evolution of the hemisphere." I support the removal of Columbus Day as a national holiday, and I also support the creation of a more inclusive holiday as outlined above.Flag

Name: Re Steinman on Oct 9, 2010Comments: Columbus Day only serves to further glorify a violent and inaccurate history. Teach our children the difference between right and wrong - as well as between truth and lies - and remove this deceptive holiday. An appropriate alternative, instead of forgetting the day altogether, would be to replace it with "Native Appreciation Day." Children could learn about history and rich Native American culture, as well as the theories of the first Americans coming across the Bering Strait. That way the federal holiday would not be lost, and neither would our integrity.Flag

Name: Trish Kendall on Oct 9, 2010Comments: Columbus is not a hero. Now that we know America has been populated for over Twenty Thousand years I think we need to change a few things. I. Apologize to Native People 2.Subsidize their Culture and the future of Native People 3. Thank them for all you have and all your wealth and give some back to them . 4. Leave them alone, stop the abuse, stop raping what little land they have left and stop treating them like stupid dependent children. 5. They are Kings and Queens in Their Own Country. Honor them. The day known as Columbus day is no more. This day shall remain a holiday and forthwith be called ' Immigrants Day ' ~ just a suggestion.Flag

Name: Pamylle Greinke on Oct 9, 2010Comments: This is a RACIST holiday. The First Nations Peoples, whose populations were decimated by the arrival of Europeans certainly knew America was here. Not only that, the Vikings, and probably at some point the Chinese, the Polynesians & the Africans had visited the Americas - so it's UNTRUE on top of it all.Flag
