   Comments: I disagree with HCDE Supt. Rick Smith’s decision to suspend Dr. Tom McCullough two months shy of his retirement. Mistakes may have been made, but to end a 42-year career that was so full of accomplishments in this way is wrong. If you agree – or if you want to show Dr. McCullough how many lives he has touched over the years – please sign this online petition asking Rick Smith to reconsider.

    Comments: Mr. Smith, I am dismayed that you have seen fit to continue to drag the good name of a wonderful educator through the mud. While I am aware that there have been offenses under his watch, the punishments you are inflicting are far harsher than necessary for a man who literally saved SMMHS from utter disaster three years ago. Need I remind you of the situation here before Dr. McCullough came and raised standards, embraced the IB Program, and held his staff accountable? Do you seriously feel that this is the proper way to treat a man at the end of an exemplary career? Do you realize the suffering you are imposing on this individual as well as on the population of the school? You seem to be doing everything in your power to publicly humiliate Dr. McCullough and our community, and the damage you’ve inflicted while doing so is quite extensive. Parents who trusted and respected Dr. McCullough are losing faith in HCDE, and talking about transferring to private schools. Dr. McCullough has served our community well. Please lift the suspension and its ugly implications and allow the man to retire in peace. Sincerely, Lisa Shander

    Comments: I don't think I've ever attended a school event that Dr. McCullough was not present to support the students. He has always made himself available to myself and my child during and after school. I don't think you will find a more caring, involved and competent leader. We are sorry to see him go and are appalled at this decision. Please reconsider and show respect for an outstanding career.

    Comments: To end such an accomplished career with a suspension because of actions by other adults – and a threat of harsher discipline if Dr. McCullough dares to even appeal the suspension – is simply wrong. Please show that the Hamilton County Department of Education does, indeed, value achievement in our schools, and allow Dr. McCullough to retire with the respect he deserves.

    Comments: Few people have done as much for the students and teachers of Hamilton County as this man. To suspend him at this particular time is simply wrong. Don't let him be stripped of a retirement he has rightfully earned. Rick Smith needs to find somewhere else to trim his budget.
