Preamble:

This petition seeks to ensure the security of residents in Ghana, and reliance on the law in the carrying out of security operations in the country.

Petition Background:

Around 1.30 a.m on February 18, 2014, the National Security Coordinator along with some other armed men, came to the University of Ghana campus and demolished a Toll Booth and a Security Post under construction. The National Security Coordinator has subsequently admitted on various radio stations that he ordered the demolition and attempted to defend his actions by citing traffic overflow at the University entrance (Stadium). The demolition exercise took place without prior notice to the University management, and at a time when the University had taken steps to ease the traffic. The incident has generated considerable insecurity both within and outside the University since the action did not follow due process. The actions of the National Security coordinator also send a very bad signal, especially to the youth of our country, that any disaffected person(s) can take the law into their own hands, particularly if they are politically-connected.

Petition:

We the undersigned members of the University community, parents of wards at the University of Ghana, friends and alumni of the University of Ghana, and peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of Ghana both at home and abroad are petitioning you, John Dramani Mahama, the President of Ghana, to show that you do not support the reckless use of authority, and do support the use of constitutional and democratic processes to settle disputes, by removing the National Security Coordinator from this sensitive office.
