Name: Jesse Einhorn on Mar 22, 2012Comments: Dear President Obama- In 2008, I spent countless hours volunteering for your campaign, both for the primary and general elections. I made several donations amounting to three hundred dollars - a sizable chunk of my modest graduate school stipend. The vote I cast for you that November was the proudest of my young electoral life. And while I've occasionally disagreed with your decisions and policies, my loyalty and esteem and - again, pride - has remained undiminished throughout your first term. Simply put,: I'm about as strong a supporter as you're likely to find. That said: you're decision to pressure the Yemeni government to keep Abdulelah Haider Shaye in jail has all but destroyed that loyalty and support. All the evidence I've seen suggests that Shaye is nothing more than journalist, not a criminal and certainly not a terrorist; that his only crime was reporting on the inconvenient truths of the global war on terrorism; and that the only threat he posed was the embarrassment of our government and the government now imprisoning him. Yet rather than advocated for his release, you instead lobbied to keep this innocent man behind bars. I simply cannot understand why. This is not the first time I've been disappointed by a decision you've made or a policy you've promulgated. But however strong those disagreements were, they never challenged my deep respect for your leadership, my trust in your decisions, and my axiomatic faith in the good faith and decency of your presidency. And on a more personal - perhaps even selfish - level, they never challenged the enormous pride I've felt since your election for the tiny part I played in helping you win it. Dear President Obama- In 2008, I spent countless hours volunteering for your campaign, in both the primary and general elections. I made donations amounting to three hundred dollars - a sizable share of my modest grad school stipend. My vote in November was the proudest of my young electoral life, and my support (and esteem and pride) has remained undiminished throughout your first term. I think it's fair to say that outside your family your friends and your lawyer, I'm as loyal a supporter as you're likely to find. And yet…the subject of this petition - your effort to keep Abdulelah Haider Shaye in prison - has all but destroyed that loyalty and support. Every piece of evidence I've seen suggests that Shaye is a journalist, not a terrorist; that his only crime his reporting on the global war on terrorism; and that the only threat he posed was the embarrassment of Yemen's government (and, perhaps also, our own). For this, Shaye was thrown in prison. But rather than support his rightful pardon, you instead lobbied against it, and have henceforth offered only the vaguest justification for why he should remain behind bars. This isn't my first disagreement or disappointment with your decisions as president. But however strong my objections have been in the past, they never challenged the fundamentals of my support: my respect for your leadership, my trust in your judgement, my axiomatic belief in the decency of your presidency - all this remained unchanged, until now. And on a deeper, more personal (and perhaps even selfish) level, they never threatened the pride I still take in your election, and the tiny, tiny part I played in helping you win. Regardless of whether you respond to this petition and fight for the just release of Abdulelah Haider Shaye, I'll almost certainly cast my vote for you this Fall, and even lend my support again to your campaign. But whether I vote and organize and donate with *pride*, that remains an open question- one that pains me even more than the thought of you losing. I imagine the same may be true for thousands more of your strongest loyalists. But winning us back is not so hard. All you need to do is to do the right thing. -Jesse EinhornFlag

Name: Thelma Follett on Mar 22, 2012Comments: Until about this time last year I was just your average progressive thinking Democrat that had no idea about the high level of criminality active in all branches of our government. Since Bradley Manning and Wikileaks (and Michael Moore and Occupy) the floods of information concerning U.S. injustice, murder, corporate wrongdoing, and on and on, I'd say a good portion of us have become VERY aware. We see you now. You are exposed for what you are. Release Haider.Flag

Name: J. Robert Cels on Mar 22, 2012Comments: The treatment of Abdulla Haider Shaye by throwing him in jail just for reporting the fact that a bombing strike was conducted by the U.S. and not as reported in the media by Yemini government forces. I am appalled that President Obama would use his influence to prevent the Yemini president from signing the Shaye pardon that had been prepared for his signature. No doubt it is embarrassing that the killing of civilians in Yemen by U.S. bombing raids is broadcast around the world. However, that is no excuse to cause pain and suffering to the reporter who was just doing his job. I am profoundly disappointed in the action of President Obama. J. Robert Cels, March 22, 2012.Flag
